V5R4 supports this code, which functions like a data structure:

DCL VAR(&DATTIM) TYPE(*CHAR) LEN(20)
DCL VAR(&CYMDHM) TYPE(*CHAR) STG(*DEFINED) LEN(12) DEFVAR(&DATTIM 1)
DCL VAR(&YMD) TYPE(*CHAR) STG(*DEFINED) LEN(05) DEFVAR(&DATTIM 4)
DCL VAR(&YMDHM) TYPE(*CHAR) STG(*DEFINED) LEN(09) DEFVAR(&DATTIM 4)
